Cannabis Grow Journal – Week 1 Seed Starting

Today 6/6/2023 I started 6 cannabis seeds. This process, seed starting, is a simple one. You really only need 4 items, your seed, water, sandwich baggie, and a paper towel. You can also get a little fancier with the paper towel method and put them on a plate. Glamorous, I know.

There are other methods to start seeds but this is the way I’m going for this grow.
I have an interesting selection of genetics that I’m working with this outdoor season. I have Colorado Cookies and Cinderella Jack, both Dutch Passion Seed Company Autos. I also have a Critical + 2.0 from Seedsman.com. I found 1 Banana Kush seed from last summers grow that I’m getting going. Lastly, I have 2 unknowns. These unknowns come from a family friend and could be 5-15 years old. I’m really interested in seeing what comes from those 2 seeds.

I started all the seeds on Chinese food soup lids, with wetted paper towels. Once each seed was placed, they went on top of our stand-up freezer.

6/9/2023 I checked on the seeds for 2 days and decided the morning of day 3 that I would plant each in their solo cup, whether they had popped or not. The 3 autos had popped, and 1 of the unknowns had just started to show its tap root, and the other 2 seeds hadn’t popped yet.

For the solo cups, I labeled each for their seeds and used scissors to put 3 holes in the bottom of each cup. I then added my soil, coco coir, and worm casting mix to the cups and watered them down with a lightly amended worm leachate water. I let the cups drain well and place my seeds about 1/5th of an inch below the soil top. I wrapped the tops in plastic wrap, punched in a few breather holes and placed them in my shelving grow space in the front hall.

These seeds will have the plastic wrap removed as soon as I see their first leaves pop above the soil. I expect this to occur in the next 3-7 days depending on how warm they stay over the next few days.
